What you get

Battery pruning shears that work two ways: in the hand for roses, hedges and low branches, and on top of the telescopic pole for the high ones, with both feet on the ground. The aluminium pole has four sections, extends to 3 m and locks at any height, so the blade reaches about 5 m from the ground; the cutting head turns up to 180° for side branches. The weight stays where your hands are: the battery clips into the grip at the bottom of the pole and the current runs up inside it, so only the cutting head goes up. The brushless motor closes an SK5 titanium-coated blade on branches up to 55 mm of green wood, with four opening levels for thin shoots and thick limbs. Two 4.0 Ah batteries give about 4,000 cuts per charge and take around 45 minutes on the fast charger; the fitting takes Makita 18V batteries, so spares are easy to find. Supplied in a moulded case with 13 pieces, the folded pole included.

    Two apple trees and a walnut that hangs over the roof. I did all of it standing on the grass, no ladder. The pole locks well, nothing slides down while you cut.

    One charge did the whole orchard, about three hours of real cutting, and the second battery was still in the case. The counter on the display tells you where you are.

    Cuts what it says, 4 cm plum went in one go. Four stars because fully extended you really need the shoulder strap, without it the arms feel it after a while.

    Old olive wood is hard and dry, it takes two passes, but it does not stall. Spare blades were in the case which is not obvious at this price.
