What you get

Rimless reading glasses with a progressive lens: the power grows continuously down the lens, from 0 to 5.5 dioptres, in three zones that blend into each other with no lines and no jumps. You look through the top for the television, through the middle for a screen at arm's length and through the bottom to read, so one pair covers the day instead of three pairs left around the house. They are worn straight from the box, with no prescription and no eye test, and they suit short-sighted, long-sighted and astigmatic eyes, including two eyes that differ from each other. The polycarbonate lens is impact resistant, with a scratch-resistant coating on top and a blue-light filter and UV400 underneath, so screens in the evening are easier on the eyes. The temples hold a shape-memory alloy core and no screws: they bend back on themselves and return straight, which is where cheap supermarket readers break first.

They are sold on a page in the language of each country, with the offer of that country: in Poland two pairs for the price of one, in Spain and Lithuania one pair. Every pair comes with a hard case, a microfibre cloth, a cord and an illustrated guide for the first three days.

    I had one pair by the bed, one in the kitchen and one in my bag, and never the right one. Now I read the paper and look up at the television without taking anything off. The second pair lives in the car.
